Tata Consulting Engineers India (TCE) to use Autodesk's Building Information Modeling (BIM) Solutions

Let us first take a look at ‘Tata Consulting Engineers Limited (TCE)’ so that the readers outside India or those not aware about the Tata’s presence in this sector would understand the importance of the deal.  TCE is one of India's leading engineering consulting organizations. Established as Tata-Ebasco Consulting Engineering Services in 1962, the company is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Sons Limited. TCE is ranked 188 among top international design firms for engineering in a ENR survey 2013.

TCE offers a wide range of multi-disciplinary services in project engineering across several sectors. The firm has completed more than 7,000 assignments, including the engineering of several power plants, large urban water supply, and waste water projects, several chemical, automotive and industrial plants.

Around 4000 highly qualified professionals work for the TCE. I think 70% out of 4000 are some way or the other associated with the design. I mean they are using CAD, CAE or FEA tools. TCE’s offices are located at Mumbai, Bangalore, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and Jamshedpur, a subsidiary office in Qatar and branch offices in the USA and South Africa.

Last week, Autodesk and TCE announced a strategic partnership to deliver Building Information Modeling (BIM) solutions to customers in plant, infrastructure, construction and building industry verticals.
Under this deal, Tata Consulting Engineers will leverage BIM solutions offered by the Autodesk Building Design Suite, Infrastructure Design Suite and Plant Design Suite to bring business value to its global customers in power, infrastructure, chemical, process and building sectors serving them in the key markets of Africa, Asia Pacific, Americas, Europe and India, through joint business development and engineering consultancy services.

Commenting on the announcement, J.P Haran, Managing Director, Tata Consulting Engineers said, “This partnership with Autodesk will help Tata Consulting Engineers add value by implementing BIM solutions in the building, infrastructure and plant solution space. Providing technology-enabled solutions also complements our larger strategic goals in spreading our business in the global markets.”

Pradeep Nair, Managing Director, Autodesk India & SAARC said, “BIM goes well beyond traditional CAD software that is popular in most developing countries. India’s 12th Five-Year Plan envisages infrastructure investments of USD 1 trillion. BIM will help us derive cost and time savings in such mega-projects, while ensuring sustainability. As the leading provider of BIM solutions we are delighted to partner with Tata Consulting Engineers to promote the adoption of BIM in India and other emerging markets.”

The adoption of BIM has seen significant increase worldwide in areas of building, infrastructure and construction management. According to 2012 McGraw Hill North America BIM SmartMarket Report the percentage of companies using BIM jumped from 17 percent in 2007 to 71 percent in 2012 in North America. In UK, BIM is a central theme in the government’s construction strategy designed to reduce carbon and costs as part of the overall economic development. In Singapore, BIM is an important component of public housing projects.

The deal is great step for both the companies; the happiest people with the deal are the design engineers in the TCE. Now, they would use Revit or AutoCAD Civil for their projects! Before, TCE was using MicroStation. Design engineers were finding it very difficult work with the MicroStation. Most engineers are use-to AutoCAD since their student life and thus find difficulties in using other tools. Also, the clients are demanding for the BIM. So, great partnership for Autodesk and TCE, hope they achieve excellence and customer satisfaction!

A Conversation With Ed Caracappa, Director of Global Sales & Business Development at AMD.

I have been doing interviews with the legends of the CAD, CAE and PLM industry for a while now. I must admit, I always wanted to interview someone from hardware sector, especially graphics card! Which helps CAD, CAM, CAE software to enhance its performance and upgrade user experience.

I've always been curious to know something more about graphics card technology, to me; it was a great opportunity to interview Mr. Ed Caracappa, Director of Global Sales & Business Development, Professional Graphics at AMD. I tried to learn more about him, his company, products for CAD, AMD’s latest focus, direction and strategies for India. Here is the interview:

With Mr. Ed Caracappa, Director AMD
Ed Caracappa, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your professional activities?

Well, I am an electrical engineering graduate from University of Arizona. I started my career as a production engineer with Motorola. But, soon realized that shop floor job does not interest me much! So, I switched to sales and marketing job. Before, joining AMD, I had an opportunity to work with esteemed organizations like NextComputing, LLC, Escape Studios and BOXX Technologies. I am with AMD since January 2012 and take care of global sales & business development.

Tell us about your organization?

Sure, AMD is fortune 500 company, our mission is to deliver the most visually rich and meaningful digital experiences to every technology user we touch. AMD is the second-largest global supplier of microprocessors. After acquisition of ATI Technologies in 2006 company dominated CPU as well as GPU market worldwide.

Established in 1969, with it’s headquarter at Sunnyvale, California. At present, we have more than 10,000 employees worldwide. With the long history of innovations, company has achieved its revenue targets. AMD has record growth of $5.42 billion for year 2012.

Please tell us about AMD’s latest FirePro W-series graphics cards and what are its advantages for professional CAD users?

FirePro W-series workstation graphics delivers incredible performance, superb visual quality and outstanding multidisplay design experiences to CAD/CAE professionals. We offer mid-range boards for mainstream CAD applications like AMD FirePro™ W5000, AMD FirePro™ W5000 DVI and AMD FirePro™ W7000.

AMD FirePro™ W8000 and AMD FirePro™ W9000 are dedicated boards for high-end CAD, CAE, FEA and CFD applications. All W-series cards are single-slot solution that provides smoother interactivity when working with complex 3D models and allows design engineers to quickly visualize and render designs.
AMD’s FirePro W-Series is based on the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture and offers more memory bandwidth, which makes it more than five times faster than competing solution. W-series is tested and certified for its enhanced 3D performance capability by all mainstream CAD/CAE vendors.

What performance advantages with AMD FirePro graphics cards can be expected by CAD users and why?

Today, the CAD models are becoming increasingly complex, visually rich and used for further analysis, and simulation. Many organizations are using CAD models directly for creating marketing material and presentations. So, using right professional graphics solution has become very critical to accelerate the functionality of CAD tools that speeds up 3D rendering and visualization, allows large CAD models to load faster, run simulations in parallel without impacting the quality of the graphics.

AMD works closely with all relevant software vendors in the CAx space, and gets graphics hardware tested for every new release. Our cards are certified for all major CAD tools. Users achieve 3x graphics performance increase with SolidWorks 2013 when using the new AMD FirePro W-series graphics cards.
Recently we had a collaboration with PTC, we now offer powerful new GPU-accelerated functionality in PTC Creo Parametric 2.0 that speeds up 3D rendering of transparent surfaces by up to 900% through the use of “OIT” (order independent transparency) - an advanced OpenGL programming method.

Similarly, Siemens PLM Femap and AMD FirePro have become best choice for the engineering and simulation professionals. Use of VBO's (vertex buffer objects) running on the AMD FirePro W5000 and W7000 graphic cards has resulted in exceptional Femap 11 software performance.

What is AMD Eyefinity technology and what impact it has on CAD workflow?

It’s a technology that enables user to run up to six independent and simultaneous displays with a single graphics card. It supports advance workflows, where CAD users switch between applications including analysis, simulation and data management. User can see more detail than ever, increasing his workflow productivity. Can manage multitasking more efficiently, and view more data, applications, and images at once.

What is your product roadmap for the professional graphics market?

We have product line that enhance and accelerate the user experience across PCs, gaming systems, digital devices, CAD applications and cloud servers.  The AMD Radeon is positioned for the gaming and main stream PC market. V and W-series are for the professional graphics card market. We also have partnered with the workstation OEMs, who use our cards for building professional workstations.
AMD applications are developed using OpenCL (Open Computing Language). OpenCL can natively talk to a large range of devices and its easy synchronization makes it more flexible. So, we clearly have the advantage over our competitors when developing a new product with the open source language.

Tell us about AMD India, do you have design and development center in India?

India is unique! Lot of well educated and technically sound people coupled with passion, talent and potential are easily available.  AMD India plays a significant role in the design of microprocessors, AMD Family of Accelerated Processing Units (APU) SoCs, graphics and media solutions.

Very positive, In India we are formally registered as 'ANSYS Software Private Limited' and operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of ANSYS, Inc., USA. We are headquartered in Bengaluru and have offices in Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Noida.
ANSYS Convergence 2013, Pune

We had two regional conferences ‘ANSYS Convergence 2013’ here in India this year. It is very hearting to see the overwhelming response from design community in India. We had around 1200 attendees in Bangalore and 400 for Pune event. Both venues had very good user presentations showcasing the unique ways in which customers are using solutions from ANSYS to solve challenging problems.
We have 396 employees working in India and good number of employees working on product development and supporting global teams in developing world class product.

How is ANSYS Market in India?

India is rapidly growing economy; we have good growth in last financial year ended and see increasing demand for our applications in this region. 1/3 of the total revenue comes from ASIA and we see good opportunity as 2013 continues to unfold.
It’s not only the MNCs but the Indian companies like L&T, ISRO, Tata Motors and many medium and small size enterprises are using our solutions. Large number of Government sector, Automotive, Oil and Gas, Consumer Products and Power Sector companies are utilizing our tools for engineering simulation.

I read your recent press releases on acquisitions; can you elaborate the technologies that were added to ANSYS?

Well yes. We have number of acquisitions recently. Well, we always keep on adding new features with the new release. We work hard on providing solution to the customer enhancement requests. The functionality that I would like to share is HPC Parametric Pack license; it offers to run multiple simultaneous parametric analyses. A single ANSYS HPC Parametric Pack license enables execution of four simultaneous design points.  With this functionality more simulations are done in less time, it’s very cost effective. The companies now do not have to go for hiring more engineers to complete bigger tasks instead can go for the HPC Parametric Pack License.
Another thing that I would like to highlight is the Application Customization Toolkit (ACT). It  is easy to use tool to customize ANSYS simulation environment. Even the non-experts can utilize this tool kit to automate various procedures as per company requirement. We call these ACT users as ACTors (smiles).

Sachin Nalawade Editor DailyCADCAM with David Street ANSYS

PTC’s Certified User Program through ATC Partners, India

Last Week, I had an opportunity to attain PTC’s Annual Authorized Training Center (ATC) meet,
L E A P 2013 at Hotel Hayatt Regency in Pune. It was great to meet Mr. John D Stuart. SVP Global Education and Country Manager PTC Romania, Eduarda Camacho, VP Partner Services, Mr. Sajith Mohan M.P Director – Education Program and Mr. Rafiq Somani AVP and Country Sales Manager, India

Over 100+ ATC partners participated for this year’s annual summit, shows success of the program started 6 years back. L E A P is great platform to network with other ATC partners and learn about best practices of successful ATCs.  It also provided a unique opportunity for partners to interact with senior management from PTC to gain further insights.

PTC announced the PTC Certified Professional Program, a comprehensive testing program that validates the skills of PTC Creo users based on the latest release –Creo 2. The ATCs would provide the high quality training services on PTC Creo software through In-centre training classes. On successful completion of the program, student would go for the certification test designed and developed by PTC.

While discussing, John D Stuart said “We want to set a new standard of excellence for using PTC Creo for product design and development in India. With our ATC partners we would provide world class training, material, methodology and certification”

With John D Stuart. SVP Global Education and Country Manager PTC Romania

I think this is very good initiative by PTC, thousands of engineering students undergo training on various CAD products throughout India. Having a quality course content, trained instructor and the latest tools would help students to equip him with the right skills.

“Our motive behind starting the ATCs in India is to bridge the gap between opportunities and skills by bringing engineering students and industry closer to prepare every engineering student for a competitive, global industry” Said John D Stuart “We have target of training around 8000+ engineering students on Creo 2 this year” adds Eduarda Camacho

The industry always complains about the lack of required skills in the fresh engineering graduates. Such, well designed programs would definitely play a vital role to benefit both Industry as well as students. Using tool to its optimum would simulate the innovations in new product development and save time and cost on the product development.  Higher proficiency in using Creo would help students to land into good jobs in India and abroad as well.

“With very high competition among engineering students, they are often looking for ways to set themselves apart from their peers and gain a leg up on the competition,” said John D Stuart “Our Certified User program provides validation of their skills and helps them continue their pursuit of careers in design.”

PTC Certification Program Site
To support this activity, PTC have launched a special website http://www.ptcgsindia.com with simple UI, where the students will find the

-          List of ATCs in India
-          List of courses offered
-          List of trained Instructors
-          List of Students

This list includes the database of students; those who have registered for the ATC program and those who have passed the certification exams. The employers looking for the resources can directly access this list to hire a certified user.

PTC provides course kit, which includes training manuals, scribbling pad, and pen. Also, monitor and make sure that the instructors follow the PTC training methodology.

I had chance to interact with the ATC partner GNA – IMT, Phagwara Punjab. Chitta Ranjan Tripathy of GNA – IMT said that “PTC ATC program is very unique; they provide and support us with the latest tools, world class training material developed by PTC University. So, students trained following the PTC methodology have edge over the other students at the time of interview, we easily get 100% placement for the PTC certified students”

With Mr. Chitta Ranjan Tripathy of GNA – IMT
It was great to know that more then 500 students are trained on PTC tools by GNA – IMT every year and placed in local companies and MNCs in India and abroad.

Another ATC partner said that “Creo is one of the best parametric tools, once students are trained on it. They can easily learn and understand any other parametric tool if requires”

“I am very delighted with the growth and quality of the Authorized Training Center (ATC) program in India. We are looking forward to implement similar certification program through ATC partners in US and Europe in future”   concludes John D Stuart
